Publications Management: Essays for Professional Communicators is a collection of essays designed for use in academic programs in technical and professional communication and for communication professionals in the workplace. The contributors include publications managers in the workplace and academics who teach in technical and professional communication programs. Their multiple perspectives offer a broad introduction to some of the important issues publications professionals face.
The book comprises five sections. The first, Communication and the Manager, looks at the changing responsibilities of publications managers and some of the intraorganizational communication challenges they face. The second section, Management and Supervision, helps managers meet their responsibilities for recruiting and training publications staff. Section three, Project Management and the Information Development Cycle, includes discussions, guidelines, worksheets, and information for smooth, efficient document production and project management. Section four, Legal and Ethical Issues, provide essential and provocative information on ethics and legal matters. The final section, Pedagogy, offers a discussion of the use of corporate boards to assist academic programs, and descriptions of publications management courses taught at Miami University (Ohio) and New Mexico University.
